Our no-faff guide to preventing and repairing those little end-of-winter rug rubs

Spring is nearly here, the rugs are beginning to come off…and hello, bald bits.

Whether it’s a small bare patch across the shoulders, a rubbed section of mane or an annoying mark near the wither, winter rugs can sometimes leave their mark—even when we’ve done our very best with fit.

The good news is that catching the rub early, reducing the friction and choosing the right product for the right stage can help get everything growing again before show season.

 

First: where is it rubbing?

The location of the rub can give you a clue about what’s causing it.

Across the shoulders or chest?

The rug could be pulling backwards, restricting movement or simply creating friction as the horse moves.

Along the mane or withers?

The neck cover may be moving, dragging or putting pressure through the top of the rug.

Only on one side?

Check whether the rug is slipping, twisting or sitting unevenly.

Even a well-fitting rug can occasionally create a little rub, but if the same patch keeps appearing, it’s worth checking the fit before reaching for all the lotions and potions.

 

If it’s pink, pause

If the skin looks pink, tender or broken, pause the hair-growth and conditioning products.

Keep the area clean and use a suitable topical antiseptic until the skin has settled and completely healed. If you’re concerned about the area or it isn’t improving, seek appropriate veterinary advice.

Once the skin is healthy again, you can bring in the products that support the coat and hair as it grows back.

 

For small, healed bald patches

For those small, completely healed bare patches, we love HSE Batana Butter.

It is concentrated and moisture-rich, making it ideal for nourishing dry areas and supporting healthy-looking regrowth.

Apply a small amount regularly. There’s no need to butter your horse like a piece of toast—a little goes a long way.

 

Make it harder for the rug to grab

For shoulders and the chest, spray Carr & Day & Martin Canter Coat Shine over the coat daily and brush or wipe it through evenly.

It leaves the coat smooth and non-greasy, helping the rug glide over the hair rather than gripping it and creating more friction.

This is one of those wonderfully simple preventative tricks that can make a real difference when used consistently.

 

For rubbed manes and damaged hair

Once the skin underneath is healthy, HSE HG Serum – Rapid Hair Repair is our pick for rubbed or damaged mane and tail areas.

This highly concentrated serum moisturises the hair and skin, strengthens damaged hair and helps prevent further mechanical breakage while supporting healthy growth.

Use it sparingly and consistently—this is another product where a little goes a long way.

 

 

Stop the rub before it starts

If your horse is particularly prone to shoulder rubs, we love Gateshead anti-rub vests.

They aren’t the cheapest option, but ours last for years and years, making them well worth the investment. They create a smooth protective layer underneath the rug and help reduce friction across the shoulders and chest.

Check the rug itself

You can apply every potion in the tack room, but if the rug keeps moving, the rub will keep rubbing.

 

We love Horseware Ireland rugs for their fit and stability. They stay where they’re put, allow plenty of freedom through the shoulders and have helped our horses make it through winter without sacrificing their manes.

Check that the rug:

• Allows free movement through the shoulders
• Isn’t pulling backwards
• Sits evenly without twisting
• Has correctly adjusted front fastenings and surcingles
• Isn’t creating pressure through the neck or withers

Sometimes a small adjustment, a different cut or an anti-rub vest is all that’s needed.

 

The TCH rug-rub game plan

1. Work out where the friction is coming from.
2. If the skin is pink or tender, use a suitable topical antiseptic and wait.
3. Once healed, apply HSE Batana Butter to small bare patches.
4. Use HSE HG Serum on rubbed or damaged mane and tail hair.
5. Spray Canter Coat Shine over the shoulders and chest daily.
6. Check the rug’s fit and add a Gateshead anti-rub vest if needed.

Prevention really is easier than trying to grow the whole lot back in September.
